- SPEC ( http://www.spec.bc.ca/) - SPEC, the oldest environmental organization in BC, focuses on environmental issues related to energy, food, waste, transportation and land and water conservation. They have worked on numbers of projects and encouraged environmental awareness wherever possible. SPEC has been extremely involved in gardening and food security and has even helped build vegetable gardens and fruit orchards in Vancouver schools. The SPEC building is big and blue, surrounded by a beautiful garden and is located on the corner of 6th and Maple, Vancouver, BC. This organization is definitely worth getting involved in!
- Wilderness Committee (http://wildernesscommittee.org/) - Founded in 1980, the Wilderness Committee is a non-profit society with over 30, 000 members across Canada. Their mission is to protect Canada’s biodiversity and promote environmental education. They believe that it is our duty to take action to protect Canada’s wilderness and wildlife. They focus on protecting wild lands, safeguarding wildlife, defending public lands, preserving the Pacific coast and supporting healthy communities. Their campaigns have helped gain the protection of many important wilderness areas, including wildlife habitats and some of the world’s last large tracts of old-growth temperate rainforest and boreal forest. As well, they have stopped logging in national parks and protected endangered species’ habitat. You can volunteer and help out with this amazing organization!
- WWF (http://wwf.ca/) - Founded in 1967, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has become a leading environmental organization in Canada. This organization focuses on conserving the world’s biodiversity, ensuring the use of renewable natural resources and promoting the reduction of pollution and waste. WWF has protected 38 million hectares of Canadian wilderness through the Endangered Spaces Campaign, created marine protection areas and established one of the largest freshwater reserve in the world in western Lake Superior. This is a great organization all about conservation and empowering people to take action!
- Nature Canada (http://www.naturecanada.ca/) – Nature Canada is a non-profit conservation organization, working all across Canada. Their mission is to protect and conserve wildlife and habitats in Canada and promote awareness. Their focuses include bird conservation, wilderness protection, endangered species and connecting people to nature. Nature Canada is a great organization that would be great to get involved in!
- National Geographic (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/) – Since 1888, National Geographic has operated to spread global news across the world. National Geographic has a monthly magazine that contains articles about the environment, the world’s developments and interesting current events and news.
