Anyone can make a difference

Candles May 31, 2009

Here are the instructions to make your own candles out of recycled materials! Have fun!

You will need (Makes 12 candles):

  • One egg carton (Styrofoam or cardboard)
  • Old candles or paraffin wax
  • Wicks
  • Clay or beeswax
  • Vanilla extract or another flavour

How to make:

1. Take a ball of clay or beeswax and put the end of a wick (about 2-2 ½ inches long) into the ball.

2. Press the ball of clay or beeswax with the wick onto the middle of the bottom of an egg holder section, so the wick stands up.

2. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until all of the egg holder sections have a wick in them.

3. Melt the wax or the old candles with an adult’s help.

4. Pour the wax into each egg holder section with an adult’s help.

5. After pouring the wax into an egg carton, put in a few drops of the vanilla extract or other flavouring. Do this quickly or else the wax will dry.

5. Leave the wax to dry in the egg carton for a few hours.

6. Once the wax has dried, peel of the egg carton from the candles (a knife might come in handy).

7. Now your candles are ready to go!
